When I was writing this
morning’s homily yesterday night, after having complete my four Sunday mass, I
read where Pope Francis had chosen today’s Alleluia verse from the 2nd
Letter to the Corinthians as this year’s universal focus for Lent: “Jesus
Christ was rich but he became poor, to make you rich out of his poverty.” That sounds like the theme
we would expect from Pope Francis, doesn’t it? Like the rich young man in
today’s Gospel, we can get so attached to our possessions that it is sad when
we have to detach ourselves. We may become sad and dejected
when we have to choose between God and the things of this world, even when we
know that it is the right thing to do. Even though the rich young
man is able to call Jesus “Good Teacher,” perhaps he cannot really get beyond
that, to the details and the “nitty-gritty” that all that entails. The disciplines that we
will be called to undertake during Lent – the fasting, the works of charity,
the time in prayer – will help us delve deeper into what our life of
discipleship is all about. I am very excited about
our Lenten journey that is ahead of us – and I hope you are as well. May the Lord lead us on our way.
