3/20/2014 – Thursday of 2nd week in Lent – Jeremiah 17:5-10

Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose hope is the LORD.  It is a simple proclamation from the prophet Jeremiah today. Simple, but can seem so far away from many who cannot find hope and trust in their faith, in the Lord.  Think of our modern world.  We can be surrounded by machine – by computers and tablets and cell phones and automobiles.  The noise from the radios, televisions, video games, and the busy-ness of our modern lives can drown out the prayers and thoughts that we try to formulate in our hearts.  We can become bored and complacent with our lives.  We can try to have an attitude of gratitude, but perhaps all we can muster is a hollow attempt, with thoughts of cynicism and sarcasm permeating our hearts.  Perhaps in all of this, we don’t know where to turn.  However, we hope and we trust.  We ask the Lord to help us.  Perhaps a start is a prayer of thanks in our hearts.  Julian of Norwich once said – If the only prayer I have in my heart is a prayer of giving thanks, then that is sufficient.  In the midst of all the noise, in the midst of what is filling up our reality, we can give thanks, we can hope, and we can trust.
