30 July 2025 - homily for Wednesday of the 17th week in Ordinary Time - St Peter Chrysologus - Matthew 13:44-46

St Peter Chrysologus was the Bishop of Ravenna, Italy in the early 5th century. He is well-known for the way he spoke out against different heresies and philosophies that were against Christian values. He was well-known for his short, well-crafted homilies, earning him the designation as “Doctor of homilies” when he was named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XIII.  He placed a great deal of importance in learning about our faith in order to be able to truly follow what the Church teaches.

Jesus describes the kingdom of God as being like a precious pearl that we are willing to purchase for a great price, or a treasure that we find in a field that we are willing to sacrifice for. The kingdom of God should mean something to us. It is something that we should sacrifice for, that we should celebrate with great joy.
