23 July 2025 - St Bridget of Sweden - homily for Wednesday of the 16th week in Ordinary Time - Matthew 13:1-9

St Bridget of Sweden was born in the early 14th century. The daughter of a wealthy land owning family, she married a nobleman and bore 8 children. She and her husband were pilgrims on the pilgrimage of St James in Spain. She and her husband were known for their great works of charity. After his death, Bridget became a member of the Third Order Franciscans, devoting herself to a life of prayer and caring for the poor and the sick. She later established a religious order for both men and women, the order of the Most Holy Savior, commonly referred to as the Bridgettines. She made a pilgrimage to Rome during a Jubilee year and ended up staying there until her death in 1374. She has been named as one of the six patron saints of Europe.

Our Gospel today speaks about the Kingdom of God through the parable of the sower of seeds, with some seeds landing on fertile ground and taking root, but other seeds perishing in different ways. May we unite our prayers with the prayers of St Bridget of Sweden and the community of saints, praying that God find fertile ground in our lives in which he can sow seeds of faith.
