Born in 1221, St Bonaventure became a Franciscan friar who taught at the Franciscan school in Paris. He is recognized as one of the major Scholastic theologians of the medieval period. In 1257, he was appointed as minister general of the Franciscan order. There was a big debate at the time within the Franciscan as to how they should embrace poverty as members of that order. Bonaventure required serious study of Scripture and spirituality as members of that order. In 1273, Pope Gregory V appointed him as Cardinal and Bishop of Albano, Italy. Pope Gregory asked Bonaventure to take a leadership role at the council of Lyon in 1274, which tried to bring about reunification with the Church in the East. He died that same year. He was named Doctor of the Church in 1588 by Pope Sixtus V.
Today in the Gospel, Jesus calls out those town and villages that refuse to recognize the mighty deeds he does in proclamation of God’s kingdom. Recognizing God in the midst of our calling and our reality is important for us. St Bonaventure did this through his intellect. Some of us may recognize the Lord in other ways. May we recognize the Lord’s mighty deeds.
