7 June 2025 - Saturday of the 7th week of Easter - Acts 28:16-20,30-31

This is the last weekday mass of the Easter season, as we commemorate the end of Easter tomorrow with Pentecost. Next week, we return to ordinary time. We have been hearing about the development of the early Church from Acts during the Easter season, telling us how the Church spread throughout the ancient Mediterranean world, even making its way to Rome. It states that Paul was held under house arrest, guarded by the Roman soldiers, but that he still had access to the Jewish leaders while held under house arrest, that he was still able to continue his work of evangelization and spreading the Gospel message throughout the world. The book of Acts ends by saying that Paul was held in house arrest in Rome for two years, continuing his work of evangelization.

We talk about evangelization in the Church. We talk about reaching out to others. But what are we doing about that? At Holy Savior, we just finished our weeklong Vacation Bible School last night, a huge effort put on by our parish. At the same time, the largest parish in our diocese, with a school of almost 200 students, cancelled their vacation Bible school, saying that they did not have enough volunteers to help. Some of those families from their parish ended up coming to our vacation Bible school this past week. Again, we need to ask the question, how are we are disciples of Christ participating in the process of evangelization? Paul can continue to evangelize the world while on house arrest?  What is holding us back?
