Why can we refer to an Angel or Archangel as a Saint?

When we celebrated the feast of the Archangels last week, why are Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael referred to as saints if they are angels?  Angels can also be saints?

This was a question that one of our parish’s youth had, that was passed on to me by a parent.  As we know, in our Catholic faith, angels are not people who have died and who have gone to heaven and have earned their angel’s wings. Angels were never human being.  They are another type of being  Angels are spirits that God created before he made human beings.

Angels are spirits in heaven.  The saints are human beings in heaven after they have lived their life here on earth and have entered eternal life.   Angels are not canonized saints the way a human being can be.  Angels are not members of the community of saints in heaven that used to be human beings here on earth.  But, in the case of St Michael the Archangel, we refer to him as “St Michael” as a sign of respect.  We indeed are to accord honor, dignity and respect to the angels and the archangels.
