Prayers for the Mass and Prayers of the Faithful - Feast of St John XXIII - October 11, 2017

(Adapted from the Vultus Christi Website, since Pope John XXIII was canonized subsequent to the publication of the Roman Missal).
COLLECT:
Almighty and eternal God,
who in St John XXIII,
gave to the whole world
the shining example of a good shepherd,
grant that, through his intercession,
we may with joy spread abroad the fullness of Christian charity.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, forever and ever.

PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL:
PRIEST: We now turn to God in our prayers for the needs of the Church and the needs of the world:

1. That the Church may be for all nations both Mother and Teacher,
giving life to her children and teaching them with maternal care,
to the Lord we pray: Lord hear our prayer.
2. That those in power over states and nations may be attentive to those who are in the greatest need of help and defense, we pray: Lord hear our prayer.

3. That prisoners may be helped and encouraged; that the lonely may be graced with the company of friends; that those battling addictions be liberated; and that the dying may find solace in the Blood of Christ, we pray:  Lord hear our prayer.

4. As we celebrate St John XXIII and the 2nd Vatican Council, we pray that all the faithful may persevere in prayer with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and all the saints as we proclaim the Gospel in the modern world while staying true to the faith of the Early Church, we pray: Lord hear our prayer.
PRIEST:   Almighty and ever-living God, who filled your servant Blessed John XXIII with good will and kindness; with simplicity, piety, and wisdom; mercifully grant that we who recall his memory today
may so imitate his virtues here on earth so as to share with him above
in the boundless joy of your glory, through Christ our Lord. AMEN.

OFFERTORY ANTIPHON
Come, children, hear me: I will teach you the fear of the Lord (Ps 33:12).

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS
Receive, we beseech you, O Lord,
this sacrifice of your people,
so that what is offered to your glory
in honour of Blessed John XXIII
you would bestow on us for everlasting salvation.
Through Christ our Lord.

PREFACE
It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Christ our Lord.
Three times the Lord asked Peter if he loved him,
before finding him worthy to be the Shepherd of his sheep.
In succession to Peter, Christ chose St John XXIII
to be Bishop of the Roman Church,
to preside in love over the assembly of believers
and, made strong in faith himself,
to strengthen the faith of his brothers and sisters.
And so, with all the angels we give you glory
in this, their joyful hymn of praise:

COMMUNION ANTIPHON: The Good Shepherd lays down his life
for his sheep (Jn 10:11).

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
May the sacrament we have received, O Lord,
nourish within us the fire of charity
that so vehemently inflamed Blessed John XXIII
that he spent himself ceaselessly for your Church.

Through Christ our Lord.  AMEN.
