10/5/2017 - Luke 10:1-12 - homily for Thursday of the 26th week in Ordinary Time

The passage we hear from the Gospel of Luke today is the same Gospel that is proclaimed when we have a house blessing.  I think that we can often take our houses for granted.  I was just talking to a friend of min about the conditions that the poor often live in in the large cities of Latin America.  When I lived in Ecuador for three years as a missionary, I would sometimes go to the poor neighbors of the capital city of Quito with a priest or a nun, seeing the shacks the poor lived in clinging to a hilly piece of land that was not their own, building a shelter out of cardboard or old wood, material that someone had discarded or had thrown away.  We often take for granted our houses and apartments here in the United States.  Even the most humble of our dwelling places would be luxurious compared to most standards in the world. Yet, it is an honor to be a guest in someone’s home, no matter what that home may be.  Jesus and his disciples went from town to town preaching the Gospel, being appreciative for any welcome was accorded them.  If by chance they received hostility or anger, they shook the dust off their feet and moved on.   May we not be discouraged on our journey of faith.  And may we be thankful for those who receive us with warmth and generosity.
