6 May 2020 - Wednesday of the 4th week of Easter - John 12:44-50

Jesus announces in the Gospel today: “I came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness.” Echoing this message, in the first letter of John it also states: “God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.”  In fact, God is light himself, he does not just give off light.  God is light by his very nature and character.  God is the essence and source of light - other lights flow out of him. We live in a world where there is a lot of darkness, darkness that can take the form of loneliness, depravation, cruelty, violence, anger, and immorality, just to name some of these forms.  A lot of this darkness can be found in the thoughts, words, and actions of humankind.  A young teacher once state this, thinking about Jesus in her life: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.”  We need Jesus in the world and in our lives to be the light that can drive out the darkness. Jesus can illuminate those things we need to get rid of that hide in the darkness of our lives.  Jesus is the light on the path that we are called to follow on our journey of faith. Jesus is the light of the nations, a light for all humanity in every place and at every time. We may think there are others lights we can follow in our lives.  But our faith leads us to Jesus, the one true light.
