Epigraph from The Sun Also Rises - commemorating the death of Ernest Hemingway - July 2 1961

July 2 is the anniversary of the death of Ernest Hemingway.  He died on July 2, 1961, about a year before I was born.  He grew up in Chicago - he was born in the suburb of Oak Park.  I have read many of his books, and actually took a course on the novels of Faulkner and Hemingway in graduate school - yes, quite an intense course.  My favorite book by Hemingway is The Sun Also Rise.  I read it when I was a young adult, and could really identify with these young adults living abroad trying to find meaning in their lives.  I remember the epigraph on the front page of the book, one a quote from Gertrude Stein, the other from the book of Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament.  These are great quotes that set the tone for a great book.

You are all a lost generation.
– Gertrude Stein in conversation

One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh; but the earth abideth forever… The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to the place where he arose… The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to its circuits… All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come thither they return again.
– Ecclesiastes
