6/16/2014 – Monday of 11th week of ordinary time – Matthew 4:38-42

In the Gospel today, Jesus talks about turning the other cheek when he sees so many around him wanting “an eye for an eye.” Things have not changed so much, have they, after centuries and centuries of Christianity.  Many who call themselves Christians still want revenge in the style of “eye for an eye.” I will keep this homily short today.  I found a poem written by a high school student who sees this “eye for an eye” mentality going on around her.  This is what she writes.

An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind,
in a world where revenge comes,
always after we cry,
An eye for an eye leaves everyone blind,
no matter how pure,
revenge is our crime,
we feel the need, to justify,
and rectify the countless times we've been scarred inside.

What do we need to do to forgive?  What do we need to do to proclaim God’s kingdom.  It is certainly not vengeance or “an eye for an eye.”
