2/10/2014 – Monday of 5th Week in Ordinary Time – 1 Kings 8:22-23, 27-30

For the last several weeks, we have been hearing about the first kings of Ancient Israel in our first readings.  We heard about how King Saul and King David being the first kings, and now we are hearing about King Solomon, the son of King David.  At the time of this reading. Solomon is now King & David is living out his final days.  David had planned on building a Temple in Jerusalem, but that task fell to Solomon.
Israel was warned about the dangers of having a king, but was steadfast in her desire, steadfast in wanting to be like the other nations around her.  I think of our new Bishop Joseph Kopacz here in the Diocese of Jackson, all that is awaiting him and the many expectations people have of him, even the personal expectations I myself have. We hear Solomon makes a prayer of gratitude to the Lord as he speaks to the people of Israel who are assembled, similar to the prayer of gratitude Bishop Kopacz made to us, the people of his new diocese, as his installation at the Cathedral of St Peter in Jackson. I pray for Bishop Kopacz, for his leadership of our diocese.  We pray that God give him strength and courage as he leads us as a shepherd, as our bishop.
