We have been hearing readings from the letters of St Paul in our first readings
in the daily masses this week. Today, Paul tells us that Christ is the image of the invisible God for us here
on earth. Recently, when I met with the confirmation students for their initial
interviews, I asked them about the images they have for Jesus and that they
have for God. I asked them where they
saw God present in their daily lives. That is a good questions for us to ask ourselves, for God is not some
intangible, nebulous being who is way off in the heavens. He is present here in our lives, if only we are aware enough to see him. Paul tells us that Christ was before all of creation, that he holds all things
together. In the chaos, the violence,
and the turmoil of the world, that may be hard for us to comprehend. But in the unity and beauty of nature,
perhaps we see what Paul is trying to tell us. We are challenged to see the image of Christ here on earth. We are challenged to see him in both our joy and in our struggles. I wonder if we are willing to open our eyes
to see him – to see and believe.
