Our
entrance antiphon today proclaims – “Let the hearts that seek the Lord rejoice
– turn to the Lord and his strength – constantly seek his face.”
People in our world today seek meaning
and faith in different ways and in different places. We sometimes hit road blocks or dead
ends. Sometimes we get so confused and
frustrated, we don’t know where to turn next.
Jesus tells the people of his day that they seek the Scriptures because
that is where they think they are going to find eternal life. How, Jesus says that the only place to find
new life is in him.
One of the messages I keep preaching as
a priest is that it is one thing to follow God’s laws and commandments, to know
the dogmas and doctrines of the Church, to know the Church’s social teachings
and to read the books of the Bible.
However, it is another thing altogether to have a personal relationship
with Jesus and to follow him in one’s life.
God can call us to some surprising things in our lives, and the new life
we have in him can be found in some very unexpected places. Only when we live the Gospel will the
Scriptures truly have meaning and will Jesus’ teachings really make sense to
us.
As we continue our Lenten journey, may
the new life we have in Christ find a place in our hearts and a place to be
lived out in the world. Then our hearts
that seek the Lord will rejoice.
