Catechetical Sunday was inspired by the Vatican document Provido sane consilio (On the Better Care and Promotion of Catechetical Education) published in 1935.
This year’s theme for Catechetical Sunday: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me… to bring good news to the poor” Lk 4:18; cf. Is 61:1
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me… to bring good news to the poor” (Lk 4:18; cf. Is 61:1) reveals Jesus’ mission and identity. Anointed by the Holy Spirit, he is sent to bring hope, healing, and freedom—especially to the poor, the brokenhearted, and the forgotten.
These readings show that the Messiah comes not with power or status, but with compassion and love. He has come to restore our human dignity and to proclaim God’s mercy to all. Jesus’ mission to bring God’s Good News to the poor becomes a model for the Church, us, which is called to continue Christ’s work by sharing the Good News and caring for those most in need.
We are grateful for our catechists and for all involved in our program of religious education for children, youth, college students, and adults. May we never forget our mission in the Church to bring Christ’s Good News to the poor, to those most in need, to the vulnerable, and to those on the margins. May we go outside our parish boundaries to bring this message to others.
