9 May 2019 - Thursday of the 3rd Week of Easter - Acts 8:26-40, John 6:44-51

When I go on pilgrimage on the Camino, I love getting up early in the morning and hike in the midst of the darkness, to be on the road when the sun comes up.  It is usually such a beautiful, peaceful moment, a time to reflect and to see God’s glory in creation.  It is so different than my normal morning, when I am thinking of all that I have to do in the day ahead of me.
Philip seemed to have a very hectic journey in his travels as a missionary. The Angel of the Lord comes to Philip, giving him a very specific mission to go down a certain desert road.  There he meets a court official of the Queen of Ethiopia.  After being nudged by the spirit, Philip goes up to the court official, where he finds a man who has a great thirst for learning about the word of the Lord. Maybe we don’t have the Angel of the Lord speaking directly to us in the midst of the darkness, but if we open up our hearts and our eyes to the Lord in our midst, we will see opportunities right before us of where we can evangelize and bring the Gospel to the world. The court official wanted to be baptized so badly that he stopped at a pool of water and asked Philip for initiation into the faith.  We have our ALPHA program starting up again in the fall.  Maybe we know of someone who is searching for something in their lives or who has left the Church for some reason, who could use an invitation from you to open up the door to the faith. Just like Philip in our reading from Acts today, may we all feel the call to be missionaries in the reality of our lives.
