5/9/2013 – Thursday of sixth week of Easter – Acts 18:1-8

In our readings from the Acts of the Apostles that we have been hearing throughout the Easter season, we sometimes hear about some of those who have been touched by Paul’s preaching and who in turn help him in his missionary endeavors.  Monday of this week, we heard about Lydia from the town of Thyatira, a merchant of purple cloth.  At hearing Paul’s preaching, Lydia had entire family baptized into the faith.  Today we hear about Aquila and his wife Priscilla, Jewish tentmakers who were forced to leave Rome by the Emperor Claudius.  Through Paul’s experiences in this city, he becomes frustrated at the inability to convert many of the Jews to the faith, and vowed to concentrate his preaching with the Gentile community.
Sometimes, the Word of God has a very welcome reception, and sometimes it is an uphill battle.  Yet, we are called to bring Christ’s Good News to all.  We don’t know what will greet us at the next door that we open.  May we ask to the Lord to continue to lead us and guide us in our journey of faith.
