4/9/2013 – Tuesday of 2nd week of Easter – Acts 4:32-37

I also like hearing the reading that we have as our first reading today from the Acts of the Apostles that tells us about the followers of the early Church and how they lived in community.  This community of believers was of one mind and one heart.  They held the possessions in common, and they shared things with one another according to their needs.  It amazed me to hear that there are 1 out of 5 people here in Mississippi receiving food stamps, and we still have a lot of calls at our parish from people looking for food assistance.  There seems to be so much need in our world today, so many people who do not have the basics of life and who are having a very difficult time keeping up a basic standard of living.  With the description of the early community in today’s reading and with the way they lived out the Gospel message, how are we called to be disciples of Christ in the modern world?  The answer does not always to be so clear-cut, but living out a life a discipleship in the midst of the challenges that we face each day is what is before us.
