Bulletin Reflection - 5 July 2020 - 14th Sunday of Ordinary Time - St Jude Catholic Church - Pearl, Mississippi

     We hear a Gospel reading today that is one that I often proclaim as a priest, since it is the main Gospel for the sacrament of the anointing of the sick, that wonderful sacrament of healing and wholeness that we have in our faith.  Jesus proclaims to us today in the Gospel:  “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

       There are different times in our lives when we will feel burdened by what is going on in our personal life or by what is going on in the world.  Sometimes what we see going on came seem very unjust.  Sometimes the harshness of our lives and of the world around can be unbearable.  Sometimes our reality has changed so much that nothing makes sense anymore.

       Our faith is there to speak to us in our reality, in the midst of all that we are going through in our lives.  I love this following quote from St Augustine of Canterbury, who lived in the 6th century, has this beautiful quote that speaks to this very reality: “God of life, there are days when the burdens we carry chafe our shoulders and wear us down; when the road seems dreary and endless, the skies gray and threatening; when our lives have no music in them and our hearts are lonely, and our souls have lost their courage.   Flood the path with light, we beseech you; turn our eyes to where the skies are full of promise.”

Letter to the Parishioners of St Jude Catholic Church - Pearl, Mississippi

March 26, 2020 

Dear Parishioners of St Jude: 

      I am writing this letter to inform you about a decision that was made by the Bishop, in consultation with his priest council. In the Diocese of Jackson, we are extending the ban of public gatherings in our parishes and throughout the Diocese through the end of April.  With the surge of COVID-19 cases in our state, the priests council and the Bishop decided this was the proper decision to make.  Knowing that this covers the period of Holy Week and Easter, this decision was made with heavy hearts.  However, our safety, our health, and the good of all are of prime importance during this crisis.  

     We as the pastor and staff of St Jude are here with all of you during this time.  We are going to devise a plan this week to continue to reach out to all of you the best we can during this time.  Already, as you know, we have been posting live masses and devotions every day since public masses were suspended last Tuesday.  We will send you out a Flocknote email to let you know of the schedule during the week.   These videos will be on both our parish Facebook Page and our Youtube Page.  The Facebook videos will be live, but you can watch them at any time.  We will continue to have Masses, Adoration, and other devotions.  At the end of this letter, I am posting the times of the devotions and liturgies through this Sunday.  We will notify you what our plans are for Holy Week, but know that we plan liturgies for Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil, and Easter Sunday that will be streamed on the internet.  

      This Sunday, March 29, we will have Mass on FaceBook Live at 10:00 am in English and 11:00 am in Spanish.  In addition, on Sunday at 1:00 pm we will have “drive-in” adoration in front of the rectory, at which time you may come in front of the rectory in your cars and participate in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, which Deacon John McGregor will be leading.  At that same time, Father Lincoln will have the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the rosary garden, practicing the social distancing protocol. 

     Know that as your pastor, my love and prayers go out to you at this time.  Know that we are still together as a faith community, even though we are not having public liturgies in person.  It is important for us to be united in prayer and hope at this time.  We are having to find creative ways to practice our faith together during this crisis, but know that we will do so. 

       Our prayers go out to everyone who has been affected in any way by the COVID-19 virus.  Our prayers also go out to those who are most vulnerable and at risk.

During Lent we are journeying with Jesus in his forty days in the desert in his passion on the way to the cross.  This year, Lent certainly has a very profound significance for us this year.  At Easter time, the disciples and followers of Jesus had to make sense of the new reality of the resurrection.  It is going to take time for us to make sense of this new reality, too.  Even with all that we are going through, the hope of the resurrection is with us.  We have hope that the Lord is with us every step of the way.  We have hope as we continue to journey as a parish community, as disciples of Christ, walking by faith every step of the way.

Bulletin reflection - 23 February 2020 - St Jude Catholic Church - Pearl, Mississippi

     It is hard to believe that Ash Wednesday is this upcoming week.  I always look forward to Ash Wednesday and the holy season of Lent, probably because it is a time of reflection, renewal, conversion and preparation in our lives, a time that we can use to evaluate our lives of faith and our relationship with God.  This year, Deacon John made the wonderful suggestion that we use the theme of FORGIVENESS this Lenten season.  This weekend, we are handing out wonderful Lenten reflection books entitled FINDING FORGIVENESS IN LENT.  Indeed, forgiveness is one of the hardest things we do as human beings, isn’t it?  According to Mother Teresa, "If we really want to love we must learn how to forgive.”  Hopefully, we will have a good conversation about forgiveness during Lent this year at St Jude.  

      I want to encourage all of you to come at one of our Ash Wednesday Masses, which will be at 6:30 am, noon, and 6:00 pm in English and 7:30 pm in Spanish.  In addition, we will have the Stations of the Cross each Friday at 6:00 pm during Lent, followed by our famous Knights of Columbus Fish Fry. To me, the Stations of the Cross on Friday, commemorating the day that Jesus died, is such a fitting Catholic tradition during Lent.   Our Lenten Reconciliation service this year will be on Monday, March 2 from 5:30 pm and 7;30 pm.   Our reconciliation service will be a “come and go” event this year.  We will not have a service, but will have handouts for the examination of conscience that you can use in preparation, and then you can go to one of the priests for the sacrament of reconciliation.  You may come anytime during that two hour period for the sacrament.  

      Finally, I want to mention the traditional Lenten disciplines of fasting/sacrifice, prayer, and works of charity.  Lent is only fruitful as a time of preparation and renewal based upon the effort we put into it.  I want all of us to have a fruitful Lenten season this year.  Blessings to you as we end our weeks of Ordinary Time and as we enter the holy season of Lent.  

16 May 2019 - Thursday of the 4th week of Easter - John 13:16-20 - end of the year mass of St Joseph High School, Madison, Mississippi

    The people of Ancient Israel had a very clear expectation of what the Messiah would be like.  They he would be a powerful king or military ruler who would lead their nation back to dominance and glory.   But instead, Jesus came as a humble servant.  He reached out to the poor and the oppressed.  He even washed the feet of his disciples to show his dedication to service, a service he called his disciples to follow.  All of us are called to service in different ways.  I thought about a saint we celebrated earlier this week - his name is St Dominic de la Calzada.  I learned about him on the pilgrimage I took to the Camino of Santiago de Compostela in Spain.  He was a hermit who was born in the province of La Rioja in northeastern Spain, an important wine producing region of that country. He was born in the year 1019 - that is 1,000 years ago.  As a young man, he wanted to become a Benedictine monk, but they turned down.  He did not give up on his vocation.  Eventually, he was ordained a priest.  He spent a great deal of his time as a priest improving the conditions for the medieval pilgrims on the Camino of St James: planting trees, cultivating the earth, and building a paved road that served as an alternate route connecting two large cities on the pilgrimage route.  The town he founded in Spain on the pilgrimage route is named after him: Santo Domingo de la Calzada.  It is an important stop along the route today.  His church became a cathedral where his remains are buried in its crypt.  Because of the civil work projects he started, he is the patron saint of civil engineers in Spain.  The last time I was on the Camino of St James, I attended mass in that cathedral on a Sunday with a group of pilgrims.  In the middle of mass, a rooster which is housed in a cage in the cathedral based upon an old legend about Santo Domingo, crowed several times, which is supposed to bring the pilgrims who hear his crow good luck. St Dominic de la Calzada worked hard to serve the pilgrims traveling the Way of St James, trying to make their journey easier.  1,000 years after his birth, we still remember him today.  He did not try to bring glory to himself.  He instead wanted to humbly serve the Lord, even in the midst of the adversity and challenges he had in life.  I want to wish all of you a great end to the school year, and wish you the best effort possible on your exams.  May we all hear the call to serve the Lord, no matter where our journey takes us.

St Martin of Tours Catholic Church - Hazelhurst, Mississippi

A couple of weeks ago, I had the honor of celebrating the Spanish mass at the Catholic Church in Hazelhurst, Mississippi, about 45 minutes from my home parish of St Jude in Pearl, Mississippi.  This Catholic community was established in 1881.  What a sweet community it is.  I look forward to going back for the celebrating of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12.

I am getting adjusted in my new "home" - St Jude Catholic Church in Pearl, just outside of Jackson. It is a wonderful, vibrant parish and an easy place to adjust to.  I have had a very warm welcome - could not ask for more.  Looking forward to many years of ministry here.  

Catholic Prayer for Mothers's Day - St James Catholic Church - Tupelo, Mississippi

Gracious God,

As members of the family of Christ, 

we pray for our mothers today:

Mothers who cared for us when we were helpless, 

Mothers who comforted us when we were hurt,

Mothers whose love and care we often took for granted.

We lift up to you Lord: 

Those who are grieving the loss of their mother,

Those who yearned to be a mother and whose dreams were not fulfilled,

Those who never knew their biological mother, and now yearn for her,

Those who have experienced the wonder of an adopted mother’s love, 

Those families separated by war or conflict, 

Those who are not biological or adopted mothers, but who care for us with the love of a mother. 

Lord, give all these women your special blessing.

We thank you, Lord, for the love of the mothers you have given us,

whose love is so precious that it can never be measured,

whose patience seems to have no end.

May we see your loving hand behind them and guiding them.

We pray that you bless these women with the time, love, and patience to fulfill their call as mothers.

Christmas mass schedule - St James Catholic Church - Tupelo, Mississippi

Christmas is a very joyful celebration at St James Catholic Church in Tupelo. The following is our schedule of masses for Christmas weekend. We invite all of you to join us here for mass at St James to celebrate the birth of our Savior.


Christmas eve - Saturday 
---10:00 am at Traceway Retirement Community on Main Street (take a left at the main entrance in the main buiding - mass will be held in the room right next to the library.)
---4:30 pm - Christmas music provided by the youth and children under the direction of Erin Bristow followed by the vigil mass at 5:00 pm.
---7:00 pm - mass in Spanish.
---11:30 - Christmas carols provided by our adult choir under the direction of Lailah Valentine, with the traditional Catholic midnight mass to follow at 12:00 midnight.

Christmas morning - we will only have one mass at 10:30 am, bilingual (Spanish and English), with music provided by the St James Filipino choir under the direction of Dr Noel Garcia.

Pilgrimage of St James - St James Catholic Church - Tupelo, Mississippi

It is that time again for our third annual pilgrimage walk of 5 miles to celebrate our parish's patron - St James the Greater.  For almost 1,200 years, pilgrims flock to James' holy cathedral in the province of Galicia in the city of Santiago de Compostela.  I have arrived on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela four times (2003, 2012, 2015, 2016).  Last year, more than 265,000 pilgrims arrived in that holy city.  We recreate that pilgrimage in James' honor along the Natchez Trace.  We are starting in front of the church between 7:00 am and 7:30 am and are being shuttled to Chickasaw Village on the Trace where we will start.  The hike will start at 8:00 am.  For those who choose not to walk, a spiritual pilgrimage will begin at the church at 9:00 am.  Then we will all gather for breakfast in Shelton hall afterwards.  All participants will receive one of these nifty aluminum water bottles with our parish names and the symbols of St James embossed on it - the cross of St James and the scallop shell.  As you can see, even our parish cat Mary Woodward is excited about the pilgrimage!  We are hoping for a big turnout.  Please join us for this annual event, for fun, fellowship, and prayers.  Prayer stations and water stations will be placed on the route.  

Smash burger at the Neon Pig - Tupelo, Mississippi

The Smash burger at the Neon Pig in Tupelo is considered by some surveys the favorite burger in the state of Mississippi and even won a national context for the best burger in the nation.  Even though it is just a couple of blocks from my residence, and even though I am a big fan of hamburgers, I had never been before.  I had lunch there last week on December 31 before all my New Year's masses.  It is definitely a great burger.
