The first reading today from the prophet Micah was written at the time the Jews were returning from exile in Babylon in the 6th century BC. Micah was a prophet in the same era as Isaiah and Hosea. God always sent messengers to the people of Israel to remind them of his covenant with them and of the ways they had turned away from their faith.
Micah was pleading to God to take care of his people. They had confidence in the Lord’s faithfulness and steadfast love. The reading highlights how God desire to shepherd his people and how he delights in showing steadfast mercy toward them. Our human frailty and our temptation to sin is in contrast with the boundless forgiveness and compassion of God.
No matter where we are on our journey of faith, it is good for us to be reminded of God’s faithfulness to us, of our call to repentance and renewal in the context of his faithfulness.
