Friday, October 10, marks the 12th Annual World Day Against the Death Penalty. This year's theme is "Care, Don't Kill: Mental Disorder Is Never a Crime." Often, when we think of the Respect for Life, the death penalty does not come to our minds right away. We still have an "eye for an eye" concept of justice in many states here in the United States in the 21st century. I have learned a lot about the death penalty through my prison ministry and through my work as a Catholic priest. May we speak out against all injustices that violate a respect for human life. And the use of the death penalty in our county and the unjust prison system we have that does not make out streets safe and does not rehabilitate offenders are part of a disrespect for the dignity of human life that exists in our country.
