As
Peter, James, and John see Jesus transfigured right before their very eyes on
the mountaintop, a voice calls out from the clouds: “This is my beloved Son,
with whom I am well pleased; listen
to him.” But
are we listening? Are we paying
attention to what we are hearing? Are we
paying attention at all?
In
her poem “Sometimes,” the poet Mary Oliver writes:
“Instructions
for living a life:
Pay
attention.
Be
astonished.
Tell
about it.”
We
often take so much in our lives of faith for granted. We take the fact that we even have faith for
granted. So
are we paying attention?: to our lives,
our world and our God? Are we watching
and listening to the word and wisdom of God that is around us? Mary
Oliver also wrote: “To pay attention, this is our endless and proper work.” What a wise lady.
