11/4/2013 – Monday of 31st week in Ordinary Time – Luke 14:12-14

Jesus broke through a lot of barriers in his ministry.  This is different than the approach that the Pharisees took, as they were all about keeping the rules to every little detail.  Not that keeping rules are bad, since we are all called to keep God’s commandments and the tenants of our faith.  But sometime we can get so obsessed with keeping rules, that justice, mercy, and love fall to the wayside.  Jesus challenges the Pharisees today about the way that they approach rules in their lives.
We just celebrated All Saints Day a few days ago, and today we celebrate a well-known saint in our Church, St Charles Borromeo. Charles Borromeo was born in the 16th century, the era of the Protestant Reformation, a time of great challenges and great upheaval in the Church.  His uncle became Pope Pius IV, and with that, Borromeo became a Cardinal and the Archbishop of Milan, one of the most important Catholic dioceses in all of Europe.  In the midst of the difficult time for the Church, he was responsible for organizing part of the Council of Trent, and he help usher in some reforms into the Church.  Our system of seminaries and the educational system we have set up for priests today is part of his legacy.  St Charles Borromeo lived out his faith and his calling in a difficult time in Church history.  Our current day is a challenging time to live out the faith as well.  May the Lord lead us and guide us as we face those challenges.
