Reflection for third Sunday of Advent - 15 December 2019 - Gaudete Sunday - Reflection by Father Lincoln

This Third Sunday of Advent is commonly known as Gaudete Sunday. The word “gaudete” is derived from the Latin word “gaudeo,” meaning to rejoice or to be glad. The term “Gaudete" is taken from the Entrance Antiphon for today’s mass:  “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, rejoice.  Indeed, the Lord is near”. In many ways, joy should be a virtue we strive for in our faith each day.  Below are some Scripture passages and quotes from our faith that address the subject of joy.  May joy enter our hearts today as we celebrate Guadete Sunday.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18:  “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Romans 12:12: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”

Psalm 118:24:  ”This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad.”

Habakkuk 3:17-18:  “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food,  though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.”
St Philip Neri (1515 - 1595)  ”The true way to advance in holy virtues, is to persevere in a holy cheerfulness."

Sister Faustina Kowalska (1905 - 1938)  "Act in a way that all those who come in contact with you will go away joyful. Sow happiness about you because you have received much from God.”

Mother Teresa of Calcutta (1910 - 1997) “One filled with Joy preaches without preaching."

St John Vianney (1786 - 1859) “It is always springtime in the heart that loves God."

Pope Francis “Joy adapts and changes, but it always endures, even as a flicker of light born of our personal certainty that, when everything is said and done, we are infinitely loved.”
