5 December 2019 - Advent Reflection - Scripture for the Advent Season - Stacy Wolf - Director of Religious Education

Scripture for Advent
During the Season of Advent, we spend time in our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Atriums with the Infancy Narratives and the Messianic Prophecies.  The Infancy Narratives focus on the events leading up to and surrounding the birth of Jesus.  The Messianic Prophecies are the words of the prophets, who listened to God with all their hearts and shared God’s message.  These scripture passages are familiar to the children and would be a wonderful way to enter the Holy Word during Advent.  Adults, these scriptures are not just for kids – enter this practice too and unlock the beauty of reflecting on the scriptures.
So, just how should I go about doing this?  Follow these simple steps:
Gather around and light your Advent Wreath.
Choose one of the scripture passages listed below (for longer passages, maybe choose one or two verses at a time).
Infancy Narrative
The Annunciation of the Angel to Mary – Luke 1:26-38
The Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth – Luke 1:39-49, 56
The Birth of Jesus and Adoration of the Shepherds – Luke 2:1-20
The Adoration of the Magi – Matthew 2:1-12
Messianic Prophecies
The Great Light – Isaiah 9:1a
The Names of the Messiah – Isaiah 9:5
The Mother – Isaiah 7:14
Take a moment to ponder the scripture, thinking about what you have heard.  Look for prayers within the scripture that are familiar.  If you are with children, ask them what they have heard, talk about words that are unfamiliar, or pick a word, phrase, verse to ponder together.
