The Old
Testament reading today is Jonah 3:1-10.
Verse 10 states: “When God saw by their actions how they turned from
their evil way, he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them; he
did not carry it out.”
The Mishnah
is a written record of interpretations and commentary on Hebrew Scriptures,
reflecting debates on the Scriptures that took place in the Jewish faith
between 100 BCE and 200 CE. This is what
the Mishnah says about this passage from Jonah: “Scripture does not say of the
people of Nineveh that God saw their sackcloth and fasting, but ‘God saw their
works’”!
What does
this say to us today about how we should be living out the period of
preparation and conversion and repentance during this Holy Season of Lent?
