In Luke’s Gospel this morning, the
message is very clear: to be compassionate, not to judge, to give to the
poor. By whatever degree we do these
things, it will be given back to us.
Maybe this will not happen here on earth, but certainly when we unite
with God after this life on earth. What
the Gospel of Luke asks of us is a huge challenge. We are called to go beyond what is easy and
comfortable to love our enemy, to do good to them.
The mystery of God’s grace is mediated
in the concrete experiences of our daily lives.
We are called to live out our faith in all we do in the world, not to
keep our faith hidden. We are to live
out the values of our faith in our places of work, in the aggravation of being
stuck in traffic, in our leisure activities, and in reaching out to the poor
and the less fortunate. The whole world
needs love and compassion; we are called to intentionally transform all we
encounter through the lens of our faith.
As we live out our lives of faith, as
we journey with Christ during Lent, as we contemplate those things we need to
change with the rock symbolizing all that burdens us & all that weighs us
down, may we be open to the kind of love that is God’s.
