“Blessed are they who hope in the
Lord.” As I read this psalm refrain
earlier in the week, I was thinking about what the holy season of Lent was
going to mean for all of us in terms of living out our spiritual lives and
living out a period of conversion. Then
I heard the news about Pope Benedict resigning.
A got an email from a friend at 5:38 AM telling me that there was
surprise announcement about the pope.
That morning, I later watched a video of Archbishop Dolan of New York on
the internet, as he gave an interview with Matt Lauer expressing his surprise
and shock at that announcement, and giving thanks for the pastoral care and
scholarly intellect that characterized the guidance and leadership of Benedict
as our pope for these past 8 years. Life
can deal us many surprises, many joyful moments and extremely sorrowful moments
as well. But we place our hope in the Lord
in the midst of all of the reality of the world and the reality of our lives. We don’t always know what each day will
bring, but the faith and hope we place in the Lord is always there.
I pray that Lent be a great opportunity
for us this year as we practice our disciplines of prayer, fasting, and
almsgiving. We may be going through a
good time in our lives right now, or it may be in a time of struggle and angst. No matter where we are in our journey, we are
called to place our trust in the Lord.
