12/18/2012 – Tuesday of 3rd week of Advent – Matthew 1:18-25

As we approach Christmas, which is next week away with our celebration of Christmas eve on next Monday, we hear about Joseph today from the Gospel of Matthew, about his journey just prior to the birth of Jesus.  As we know, Joseph was surprised to hear about the upcoming birth, since he and Mary had not yet had relations.  So often the emphasis is on Mary as we think about the events that lead up to the birth of Christ, but today the emphasis is place on Joseph.  As he has an angel come to him in a dream giving him instructions as to what he must do, we think about the integrity in which he follow those instruction, doing exactly what the angel told him to do.  We think about the way that Joseph discerned God’s will for him.  Joseph did not choose the easiest path, but it was the path that God had chosen for him.  God gave Joseph a message of encouragement during this difficult part of his journey, and Joseph was will to act about that encouragement.  Joseph had already made up his mind as to what to do, but he was willing to change his mind according to the will of God.
May we all have the grace to bring the decisions we have to make to the Lord.  May we allow God’s will and God’s grace to act in our lives, no matter how difficult and challenging it might be.
