In the message God
delivers today through the prophet Jeremiah, we can tell that God is angry with
the people of Israel. He reminds them of
the covenant he made with them, how he delivered them out of slavery in
Egypt. But he reminds them how they have
strayed from the covenant, how they did not listen to the prophets he sent
them, how they’ve stiffened their necks and turned their backs on God, how
they’ve been unfaithful.
So often, we don’t want
to change, we don’t want to listen to the harsh words that God has for us. Coming to mass is not all about entertainment
and feeling good about ourselves. But,
if we are going to be honest, some preachers and some congregations approach
faith from the viewpoint of pop-psychology, approaching both church and our
faith from the perspective of how we can feel good about where we are in our
lives, of how we can advance in our careers and in our station in society. However, it all boils down to where we are in
our relationship with God and how we are building up his kingdom here on earth
and in our community of faith. If there
is something we don’t like about our parish, do we sit back and complain, do we
look for another place to worship, or are we willing to work hard to build up
his kingdom and build up our community of faith? How are we stiff-necked as we journey through
this holy season of Lent? How do we need
to change our lives? These are good
questions we can ask ourselves.
