James has been talking to us about the conflict that exists
within a community of faith, telling the people that this conflict and their
actions often can go against the Gospel of Christ, and often can go against the
friendship we have with the world and the friendship we have with God. Look at how sometimes we Catholics get mocked
by our secular world, how we are looked down upon by others who claim that they
profess the same Christian faith. It
might even seem like we have competing spirits within us sometimes, doesn’t
it? Sometimes it might seem like we have
a devil on our shoulder who is trying to tempt us into doing something we know
in our heart is wrong.
In this six-week session of the Why Catholic program that
we’ve been following, we’ve been looking at a lot of different ways to
pray. Prayer is essential in growing in
our faith and in communicating with God.
Some of these ways to pray may seem new and strange at first, but we
need to keep searching in order to find a way we can communicate with God and
to listen to him with all our hearts. I have enjoyed journeying with the
different Why Catholic groups, in discussing different prayer approaches with
the members of these groups. If we don’t
pray regularly, if we don’t cultivate a relationship with God, then the voices
from our world will eventually drown out our faith.
Where are we in our friendship with God? How do we hear him interacting in our lives?
