Today we gather together for our first Friday mass and for our mass of the anointing of the sick. I love when we come together to bring this sacrament of healing for anyone who wishes to receive a special blessing to bring healing into our lives.
Today, in our first reading, we hear from the book of Sirach about King David, a continuation of the story of David which we have been hearing from the 1st and 2nd books of Samuel these past two weeks. The story of David is based on the historical king in Ancient Israel, but we have to wonder how much of that story has aspects of legend to it. Sirach extolls David’s courage, stating that he battled lions and bears. We know that David had a great reputation for courage and bravery, but we also know that he had his flaws, weaknesses, and mistakes. But, what we hear stand out in our reading from Sirach today is not just his strengths, but also his humanness and his love for God. We can also turn away from God and make mistakes, but like David, we are called to repent and turn back to God. How often have we ourselves turned away from God due to our own will and our own desires, straying from the path of faith. God’s love for his people and his chosen ones calls out to us today in the story of David. God also calls out to us today in the sacraments: in the Eucharist, providing us food and nourishment for our journey, and in the sacrament of anointing, touching us with God’s healing touch for any ailments we have body, mind, and spirit. May we know that God always calls us back to him in repentance and conversion. God forgive us for our sins when we show contrition, as we turn back to him and make amends. In the story of David today, let us discover solace and comfort in God’s great love for us.
