The early Church was
expecting the return of Jesus at any time.
Its members certainly expected it to happen in their lifetime. And here we are two thousand years
later. We are expecting his return in
glory, but have no idea when it will happen.
Some today are using the Mayan calendar to predict when the world will
come to an end. You might remember
Harold Camping from American Christian radio who predicted that the world was
going to end in May of 2011, as he created a big stir about it. And when that date in May passed, he said the
actual apocalypse would happen in October of that year. That date has passed, and we still wait. The followers of Christ continue to break
bread, receiving his body and his blood in their lives as they gather around
the table of the Lord. We still wait for
the coming of the Lord, but we don’t profess to know the date when he will
come. We wait with expectation, just as
we will soon start a time of waiting and preparation during the Advent season
for the coming of Christ into our lives at Christmas. God’s presence is still here with us, and
elements of God’s kingdom are with us as well.
We wait for the fulfillment of God’s kingdom, but we celebrate God in
the here and now, in the reality of our lives.
