Introduction to the mass and to the penitential rite: Today, on this first weekend of Lent, we hear of Jesus’ sojourn in the desert as a model for our Lenten observance. Today, we pray that our faith be renewed and that our almsgiving be sincere as we call to mind our sins:
Lord Jesus, you help us to resist our temptations, Lord have mercy.
Christ Jesus, you are the eternal sign of the Father’s love for us, Christ have mercy.
Lord Jesus, you are the way that leads us to eternal life, Lord have mercy.
May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. AMEN.
Introduction to the creed:
In gratitude for the Lord’s love for us, let us profess our faith:
Prayers of the faithful:
PRESIDER: Let us place before our compassionate and our merciful God our needs & the needs of the whole world.
1. For the Church, that the Holy Spirit will help all of us to faithfully live as disciples of Christ each day,
2. For all who are unemployed, for those who are looking for a new job, for those having financial difficulties or who have lost hope,
3. For a deeper respect for our world, which God created. May we gain a greater understanding of how we are stewards of God’s creation, and may we put that understanding into practice.
4. For all who are alienated from the Church, for those who have fallen away from the faith that God will touch their hearts and lead them to a renewal of faith.
5. For the sick and shut-ins of our community, for the repose of souls of faithful departed -
6. For all of us on our Lenten journeys, may we grow in our faith in the Lenten practices of prayer, almsgiving, and fasting.
PRESIDER: God of the deserts and the high places, see into our hearts and help us in the midst of our reality. Grant our prayers, spoken and silent, which we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord forever and ever. Amen.
