The fishermen were washing their nets. They were good fishermen who knew their trade very well. However, this day, they worked diligently and did not catch any fish. But, they took this in stride, hoping that the next day would be better. Then, Jesus comes along. Jesus is earning a reputation for being a great teacher, but he is no fisherman. He tells the fishermen to go back out, to cast their nets in the deep. Sometimes, no matter who we are, our work does not achieve the results we want. Sometimes we come up empty-handed. The abundant catch that day was a sign to these men that their labors as Jesus’ disciples would reap a bountiful harvest.
In ministry, we try different things. Sometimes those things work out really well. Other times, the challenges and struggles can overwhelm us; it can seem like failure. Yet, just as Jesus told the fishermen to cast out their nets again, we also must never give up. We are to be dedicated to our ministry. If we stay dedicated, there will be a harvest. Sometimes it might seem easy for us to give up. But we are called to stay dedicated to our faith and in our proclamation of God’s kingdom.
