I had the blessing and opportunity to pray the 30 days of the spiritual exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola in the summer of 2019. It was a very amazing experience. Near the end of the exercises, we discussed how ingratitude was considered the worst sin by St Ignatius. Here is a quote from the letter of St Ignatius of Loyola. The quote is both here in English and in Latin.
"Ingratitude is the most abominable of sins and that it should be detested in the sight of our Creator and Lord by all of His creatures."
"Ingratitudo est maxime occiderant peccatorum, et quod non sit deprehensa in conspectu nostrorum Creator et Dominus per omnes creaturas."
Right after that quote, Ignatius states: "As such, (ingratitude) is the cause, beginning, and origin of all sins and misfortunes. On the contrary, the grateful acknowledgment of blessings and gifts received is loved and esteemed only on earth by in heaven." Even in our sufferings and our most difficult times, God calls us to give thanks and gratitude for our blessings and for the grace he gives us to meet our challenges.
