When God put his breath into human beings from the clay of the earth, he breathed life into humanity and showed them how to take care of his creation. When Lent starts in a week and a half, we are going to promote the video series Forgiven on FORMED, which addresses the sacrament of reconciliation. A big part of the sacrament of reconciliation addresses the Catholic moral life, as well as God’s laws and commandments. The sacrament of reconciliation is about the sins we commit, both venial sins and mortal sins. As our first reading tells us today, man could eat the fruit of any tree of the garden except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. That tree can be likened to the many opportunities that are presented to us in life. Of those opportunities, God asks that we not choose evil. We know this in our hearts, but in the reality of daily life, it is not always easy to resist temptation. It is not just a theory, but a complicated lived reality. God’s unconditional love for us is always there. God’s love calls us to turn to the Gospel message and to turn away from sin. God’s love is there for us even in the midst of our sins. Out of our free will, God calls us to turn back to him in the reality of our sins. As we journey in these weeks of ordinary time before the liturgical season of Lent begins on February 17, once again we will listen to the familiar Lenten themes of repentance, conversion, and renewal. God calls us to trust in our faith. May we see the beginning of the season of Lent as a new opportunity in our lives, no matter how rough that reality is.
