"Glance at the sun. See the
moon and the stars. Gaze at the beauty
of earth’s greenings. Now think. What delight God gives to humanity with all
these things. All nature is at the
disposal of humankind. We are to work
with it. For without it, we cannot
survive.” These words were written by Hildegard of Bingen,
a German Benedictine nun from the 12th century who was named as a
Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XVI.
Like Hildegard, the author of the book of Wisdom saw God in
creation. Yet, the author wonders how men and women of
learning and science can understand so many things while they fail to
understand God or come to know him. God is indeed in the things they study, but they
fail to see his presence. The author of Wisdom states that while the pagans
can be misguided in their worship of nature, making things like the wind and
fire and the stars gods in themselves, the pagans actually worship God in his
creation without even realizing it. We can see God in the majesty of creation, but we
can miss so many other ways he is present to us. Lord, help us to see your face. Lord, let us take in the experiences we have each
day, the people we interact with, and the sights and sounds of the day, and see
you as you are present in them. Let us ponder these things in our hearts.
