Sometimes God works in a very tangible and
direct way in our lives. We see the multiplication of the loaves and
the fish that Jesus performs in the Gospel today. Without a doubt, we recognize God’s hand in
that miracle that fed the hungry crowds. Sometimes, though, it is hard to see God at
work. We can start a large task and we are so
caught up with the details that sometimes we cannot see the big picture. I recently read this quote from Anne Lamott,
an essayist and writer who is Catholic. She writes about things that have
touched or affect her life and the lives of those around her: depression,
single-motherhood, alcoholism, and trying to live as a disciple of Christ in
the modern world. This is her
quote: “I do not understand the mystery
of grace — only that it meets us where we are and does not leave us where it
found us.”
God meets us in our reality. I think that sometimes we forget that. If we are angry, God meets us in our
anger. If we are tired and weary and
burn out, God meets us there as well. If
we are full of joy in our hearts, God will meet us there in that joy. And if we are hungry like that crowd was in
today’s Gospel, whether it’s a physical hunger or a hunger for justice or a
hunger to have our voice heard, then God meets us in that hunger. I know that the crowd was never the same
after the grace of God worked that miracle in their lives in the multiplication
of the loaves and the fish. God’s grace is there. It is certainly there
in our lives in different ways. It is a
freely given gift for us. Are we going
to let his grace work in our lives?
