Today, we hear a parable from Luke’s Gospel in which each of the servants receives a coin. Scripture scholars estimate the values of these coins to be approximately three months of wages. Those who invested the coin and used what the king had given them are to be rewarded, but the servant who kept the coin hidden is to be punished. The end of the parable states that Jesus continued on his journey to Jerusalem. This is where Jesus will meet his death on the cross. However, Jerusalem is also the place of resurrection and salvation as well.
Our parable is about a king, which is interesting because this upcoming Sunday we will celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King, the last Sunday of our liturgical year. We are getting close to the start of the Advent as well. As disciples of Christ, we all live out of faith, but we do so in different ways. The Lord asks us to strive toward perfection, but due to our human failings, we will not reach that perfection. Thus, we are to ask pardon and forgiveness of God and of our brothers and sisters. Sometimes life can be challenging and difficult, particularly when we lose a loved one or when we go through sufferings on our journey or when we are battling an addiction. However, we are always called to do our best and to continue on our journey. How are we using the gifts God gives us? We never know when our journey on earth will come to an end.
