The Israelites are in the middle of their arduous journey in the dessert. Moses tells them that they have a very real choice in front of them: they may choose life or they may choose death. They can follow the laws and commandments of the Lord, in which case they will arrive safely in the land of milk and honey that God has promised to them. Or, they can make another choice: they can turn their hearts away from the one true God, they can serve and worship other gods and idols, in which case they will perish.
The choice seems very simple on the surface, doesn’t it? We have such a choice a well, but so many in our society choose things that are against God and that are bad for them. I do not really want to look in the newspaper or turn on the news anymore, because it often reports on men and women who are making bad choices and who are turning their backs on God. Many of the prison inmates will tell me that they are making the choice to try to find God because they realize that he has not had much of a role in their lives in the past. Many of them realize that their lack of faith in God is one of the things that influenced their bad decisions in the past.
We are beginning our Lenten journey this week, having started this journey yesterday during our Ash Wednesday liturgies. Lent is a wonderful time of the year for us, where we can look deeply into our lives and see the ways that God is calling us to change our lives. May our Lenten journey this year be a good one. May it help us change our lives and bring ourselves closer to God.
