It is hard to believe that in ten days, we will be commemorating Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week. Today, our entrance antiphon, taken from Psalm 105, proclaims: “Let the hearts that seek the Lord rejoice; turn to the Lord and his strength; constantly seek his face.”
People in our world today seek meaning and faith in different ways and in different places. We sometimes hit road blocks or dead ends on our journey through life. We sometimes get so confused and frustrated that we don’t know where to turn next. Jesus tells the people of his day that they seek the Scriptures because that is where they think they are going to find eternal life. Jesus states that even the Scriptures testify to him. The only place where we will find new life is in him.
Indeed, we are called to follow God’s laws and commandments. We are called to know the dogmas and doctrines of the Church. We are called to study the Church’s social teachings and to read and study Sacred Scripture. However, that is not enough. We are called to have a personal relationship with Jesus and to follow and interact with him on our journey of faith. God can call us to some surprising ways and some unexpected places in our lives. The new life we have in Jesus can be found in some very unexpected places as well. Only when we live the Gospel message will the Scriptures truly have meaning and will Jesus’ teachings really make sense to us.
As we continue our Lenten journey, may the new life we have in Christ find a place in our hearts and a place to be lived out in the world. Then our hearts that seek the Lord will rejoice.
