This Saturday, we celebrate the Assumption of Mary, a major celebration of Mary in our Catholic faith. I thought about the different feast days that center upon Mary or that have Mary as a key figure:
January 1 - Mary the Mother of God
February 2 - The presentation of Jesus in the Temple by Mary and Joseph
March 25 - The Annunciation - the announcement of Christ’s upcoming birth by the Angel Gabriel to Mary
May 31 - The Visitation of Mary to her Cousin Elizabeth
Monday after Pentecost - Mary, the Mother of the Church
August 15 - The Assumption of Mary
August 22 - The Queenship of Mary
September 8 - the Nativity of Mary
September 15 - Our Lady of Sorrows
October 7 - Our Lady of the Rosary
November 21 - The Presentation of Mary
December 8 - The Immaculate Conception of Mary in her Mother’s Womb
This does not include particular apparitions of the Blessed Mother (such as Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Guadalupe, or Our Lady of Fatima) or the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas.
It should not surprise us as to the many different ways we celebrate Mary and honor Mary in our Catholic faith. In fact, the celebration of Mary as the Mother of Church right after Pentecost was a feast day that was recently added by Pope Francis.
We honor the Assumption of Mary this weekend. Although we will not have a Mass, I will post a video of the Gospel and reflection on the Assumption of Mary on our Facebook Page for this solemnity, which will be celebrated Saturday, August 15.
Blessings to all of you - have a blessed week - Father Lincoln.
