St Ambrose was the Bishop of Milan at the end of the fourth century and a mentor to St Augustine. He was chosen as one of the four original doctors of the Church. He is well-known for his opposition to Arianism, a heresy in the Early Church. In reflecting upon to topic of who is our neighbor in yesterday’s Gospel reading of the Good Samaritan, I came across this quote from St Ambrose: “Mercy, not kinship, makes someone a neighbor.” In this year of Mercy, and with all our country is going through right now, let us be challenge as to how we define neighbor.
