15 June 2016 – Wednesday of the 11th week of Ordinary Time – Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

Today’s Gospel might sound familiar.  It is the same Gospel reading that we hear on Ash Wednesday each year to kick off the season of Lent.  Today’s reading is part of the Sermon on the Mount found in the Gospel of Matthew.
As we listen to the message in today's Gospel, we might ask ourselves: Do our actions reflect our faith?  Do our actions come out of our faith or are they just for show?
I saw an article on a Catholic blog on the internet about Chick-fil-A, a restaurant that is proud of its Christian roots, that tries to be a witness of faith in the community.   Our Chick-fil-A restaurant here in Tupelo does a lot to be a part of our community.  As a witness to the Christian faith of its owners, Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays in observance of the Lord’s day. It is often criticized in our secular society for the way it is so overtly Christian and how it speaks out for the values of the Christian faith.  Yet, this past Sunday Chick-fil-A opened two of its restaurants in the city of Orlando in order to provide food free of charge for those who were donating blood for the victims of the shooting in that city over the weekend. Representatives of Chick-fil-A made the following statements: “We are appalled by the senseless crime that was committed this weekend, but we are part of a community that stands strong and stands together….We are just honored to be one of many organizations that are helping our friends and neighbors in the Orlando community during this difficult time."  Chick-fil-A let its actions speak for its faith this weekend.  May we always do the same.
