God asked the people to listen to his voice, but, in our first reading, the prophet Jeremiah describes how the people turned their backs on God and stiffened their necks. Then, in the Gospel, when the people see Jesus drive out a demon from a man who could not speak, rather than seeing the miracle and joy in that event, they see this healing as coming from the power of evil rather than from God.
During this holy season of Lent, God is asking us to re-orientate ourselves and to re-orientate the way we see the world. Think about how you can write a letter or a document, and you can read it over and over again without seeing the errors that are contained therein. I always had a friend read through my papers before I turned them in at the seminary. The proof reader could always catch some errors that way that I wouldn’t notice otherwise. The people of Israel needed the prophets to show them the way and to give them direction. We need the word of God and God’s commandments to keep us on the right track and to lead us to where He wants us to be.
May our Lenten disciples continue to lead us and guide us. May we hear the voice calling out to us in the midst of all the other voices that are calling out to us in our lives.
